We organise a variety of events, such as lectures, workshops, field outings, garden visits, plant sales and open days.
All events are held at Treborth Botanic Garden unless specified otherwise.
Ventures to the Arctic for Plants & Animals - a talk by Dr Peter Evans
This is a Donation event.
Dr Peter Evans is Honorary Professor in the School of Ocean Sciences at Bangor University. He is also the director and founder of the Sea Watch Foundation, a pioneering “citizen science” organization that educates, informs and advises for better protection for marine mammals. Peter was listed by BBC Wildlife Magazine as one of the 50 most influential conservation heroes.
A frequent visitor to polar regions, Peter has developed a special interest in arctic alpine plants. He has recently travelled to places such as Svalbard and Northern Norway to see them in the wild. Being a keen photographer, Peter has some great photos of the plants he's seen, and the wildlife, too, of course.

Christmas Flower Bauble Workshop
Christmas flower bauble workshop with Anna from Branch & Brush Studios.
Sunday 8th December 10am-12pm at Treborth Botanic Garden.
Create a selection of beautiful glass baubles, decorated with pressed flowers from Anna's personal collection and filled with a choice of locally grown dried flowers and Christmassy scents.
Take your flower baubles home to hang on the tree or gift to friends and family for a lovely handmade Christmas.
Expect to make two or three baubles each, during a morning of flowery festive fun! Hot drinks and mince pies included.

Join resident artist Doreen Weaver who will guide and support you through the process of drawing and painting the captivating structures of all plants: flowers, leaves, fruits or vegetables. Learn at your own pace in an inspiring and supportive environment.
The sessions are held fortnightly on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month.
Suitable for all levels, beginners welcome (no under 16s).
Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. Materials can be provided for beginners.

Annual Members Meeting and Gardeners’ Question Time
The AMM will be in the Lab at Treborth but it will also be available to members online if you want to join from home.
This is a Free Event.
The first part of the meeting will be comprised of reports from the trustees and updates from the Garden team.
After a break for refreshments our Treborth experts will be ready to answer your gardening questions!

This month’s talk is by David Charlton whose talk is entitled ‘Flowers of the Pyrenees’.
David has led alpine flower holidays for Colletts and has co-authored pictorial guides to mountain flowers of several regions including the Pyrenees.

Talk by Sean Adcock about traditional dry stone walls
This is a Donation Event.
The title of this talk is: “Spot the Difference: Patterns, Peculiarities and Possibilities”
Sean is a Master Craftsman dry stone waller and has written extensively on the subject and lectured world-wide. We have several examples of his wonderful work at Treborth – at the wildlife pond, the new Welsh medicinal garden and the Size of Wales garden.
Sean says the talk is “A look at the variety of dry stonework that can be found across the UK with particular reference to North Welsh examples. From random to coursed, holey and single. Herringbone or vertical, cloddiau, flags and crawiau. Sheepfolds, bridges and barns. Consumption walls, and slate quarries. You name it - if it’s built without mortar, this talk looks at it.”

Guided Moss Walk with Sue Grahame at Treborth Botanic Garden (£10/£15 plus Eventbrite booking fee)
The Garden has created a moss trail (the Mosses and Liverworts of Treborth) and this will be an opportunity to be guided around the trail with FTBG member and bryologist Sue Grahame. The walk will be followed by an opportunity to have a look at bryophytes under the microscopes in the Lab.

Fungus Foray
This is a Donation Event.
The colours, shapes and stories of fungi give us endless fascination. Come and look for them at Treborth!
We are delighted to welcome expert, Charles Aron, back to Treborth for our annual fungus foray. It’s a highlight of our calendar and, with over 400 species at Treborth, it’s a brilliant opportunity for all the family to learn more about this amazing hidden world.

No booking required. Please arrive on time and meet outside the main building.

North Wales Alpine Garden Society Field Meeting to Tan Dinas Quarry
Dr Richard Birch (Botanist & Geologist) will lead a North Wales Alpine Garden Society field meeting at Tan Dinas Quarry on Anglesey.
Friends of Treborth Garden are cordially invited.
Donations are welcomed in cash on the day. A minimum of £2 is suggested.
Tan Dinas is a limestone quarry on the east side of Red Wharf Bay, Anglesey, designated as a SSSI for its Carboniferous limestone stratigraphy
Join Dr Richard Birch on a walk along the coastal footpath to this disused quarry to see remarkable coastal views, fascinating geology and several plants otherwise very rare on Anglesey.
Parking is limited and the walk is fairly arduous. The map shows parking for 5 cars near the walk start.
If no parking spaces are available please park in Llanddona at the school (Ysgol Hên). Lifts will be given to the walk start from 9.45 am.

Draig Beats Festival
Draig Beats Festival in Treborth Botanic Gardens

Draig Beats is a family friendly, fundraising event, that continues to enhance links between the University and local communities.
There will be plenty of live music, talks, workshops, food and drink, showcasing local initiatives and lots of activities to keep the kids busy!
The event is organised to fundraise for and support Dr Sophie Williams, an honorary lecturer at the School of Natural Sciences, who contracted Japanese encephalitis while on fieldwork in China in 2015, as well as the volunteering group Friends of Treborth Botanic Garden.

Spring Plant Sale
Treborth Botanic Garden
All plants are grown by members of the Friends of Treborth and by Treborth Botanic Garden horticulturalists. We will have a wide selection of plants available, which will include vegetable seedlings, annuals and perennials, carnivorous plants, cacti and succulents, house plants, trees and shrubs, and more! We will also be selling a variety of refreshments, and cakes, jams and chutneys.
A selection of talented local businesses will also be hosting their own stalls selling hand crafted and local produce.
We can take contactless payments and cash. Free parking.
Members of the Friends of Treborth Botanic Garden have a private sale hour from 10.00 to 11.00.
Guided walk to Wylfa Head, Anglesey
Nigel Brown will take us on a walk to this lesser known corner of Anglesey, to see coastal birds, spring flowers and dramatic geology.
We shall explore the coastal grassland and heathland of Wylfa Head, a notable SSSI for such maritime highlights as spring squill and choughs. The Precambrian geology is dramatically varied. Wheatears and other summer migrants frequent the headland and gannets will be fishing near their newly established colony at Middle Mouse.
Meet at 10.30 in the car park at SH356.938 situated at the end of the lane signposted Wylfa Power Station which leads north from the A5025 at Penlon between Tregele and Cemaes. Bear right before the entrance to the Nuclear Power Station and continue for nearly a kilometre down the narrower lane to the car park.
Please bring a packed lunch and suitable clothing for a coastal walk. Walking boots recommended, terrain moderate. Binoculars are also recommended. Please note that there are no toilet facilities at this site. Finish mid-afternoon.

Cholmondeley Castle Gardens Visit and Spring Plant Hunters Fair
Early spring coach trip to the spring plant fair at the delightful Cholmondeley Castle Gardens in Cheshire. This will be an ideal opportunity to pick up spring plants and bulbs or anything else that takes your fancy from a diverse and exotic range of items. Also, you will have time to explore the delightful Gardens that includes a lakeside walk, temple and folly gardens, laburnum grove and their famous Lavinia Walk with spring highlights: eremurus, delphiniums and tree peonies. The bluebells should also be nearing their prime at this time of year.
The cost is £22 plus Eventbrite booking fee and is for the return coach trip only; there will be a separate £5 entrance fee for the Gardens. Once you have booked we will contact you to arrange your pick-up (choice of Caernarfon (Morrisons), Llanfairpwll Park and Ride, and Colwyn Bay (if required)).

Len Beer Memorial Lecture – In the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, a Plantperson’s Paradise
Eric Sutherland Lecture Theatre, Main Arts Building, Bangor University
This year’s speaker is Martin Walsh who is an Irish garden designer and consultant and a modern-day plant hunter, who lives and works in Dublin. Since his early teenage years, he has had a love of all types of plants with a particular interest in perennials, bulbs and Irish wildflowers. One of his great passions in life is observing plants growing in their native habitats, whether in his own back yard or in exotic parts of the world.
We would appreciate a donation for this event which can be made here, or in cash on the night.

Film night with Dr Richard Birch / Noson ffilm gyda Dr Richard Birch
Richard will be showing two of his films. The first is entitled 'Crete... in early spring' (a botanical journey), and will include some of Richard’s wonderful and inspiring photographs.
The second film is intended as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education in schools) project and is called: ‘Tomorrow Story' (A Natural History... with zombies). This intriguing film has been created by Richard to appeal to 8-11 year olds (and older) as part of an ecology and climate change presentation. Richard wants our views on this, so be ready to give feedback!
Online talk by Sue Clarke "Margery Fish" / Sgwrs ar-lein gan Sue Clarke “Margery Fish”
Sue is the vice-chair of the Cottage Garden Society, and a national collection holder of various hardy geraniums, having been growing these cottage garden essentials for 25 years. She will be talking about Margery Fish, who was a pioneering gardener and garden writer of the cottage garden style of the mid-20th century. Since her death in 1969, her own garden, East Lambrook Manor in Somerset, has been awarded Grade I listed status and, against the odds, remains open to the public.
